In tracing this ebb and flow of colour, we find ourselves tracing the tide of our own emotional responses to the density or diaphaneity of the colour. We find ourselves wondering whether these are maps of the cosmos, or of the psyche, or of both. We find ourselves.Vipeksha’s creative will has – in the words of Dag Hammarskjöld, cited at the head of this section – “divined its counterpart” in the consciousness of her viewers, pointing us towards a universal openness to what coloristic plenitude or the pensiveness of a fine lamina that is more light than colour can tell us.We may never, as viewers, find the resources within ourselves to invoke a sunset in all its glory, or a twilight in its mottled, fading brilliance, or the immersive saturation of a flower’s heart. But to find ourselves focused before a painting, our fugitive energies gathered together for a moment, however brief; to step out of ourselves to touch something that is on the verge of vanishing, of disappearing from view – it is through such small acts of transcendence that we rise beyond the numbing routines and unthinking reflexes of the everyday, to amplify our consciousness and our world.
