Kaimurai is the identity through which Abishek Ganesh J expresses his Art and research practice. His body of work is a dialogue between organic forms and the flow of energy experienced in the Western Ghats, Ancient South Indian art, rituals, architecture and Carnatic music.
These are the elements which influenced him growing up in Southern India. He works primarily with natural Indigo pigment  on handmade paper, handloom textiles, Khadi textiles and canvas.

Kaimurai explores the realm of raw energy- the movement, patterns, textures and decay in nature ; an inherent vibration that is omnipresent and ever evolving. His markings (from fine strokes to large brush strokes) seemingly calm and yet aggressive are characteristic to the organic nature of his work. There is a sense of minimalism with his monochromatic works  and a focus of energy on a singular element or moment. An expression executed with Natural Indigo.

“There are three elements which trigger my work – Material (Natural Indigo), Organic forms (real or fantasized) and Carnatic music. My mind wanders in the fantastical jungles of an ancient past, where life in strange formations is in varied abundance and is informed by the mysticism of Carnatic music.
It is a meditative process, an interaction between the Physical and metaphysical. My hands take control over my mind creating repeated markings, a method which renders the artwork. The outcome is for the viewer to interpret, I am just a catalyst.”

Kaimurai questions our constant tussle with nature. “We are so fearful of the unknown/unfamiliar and systematically destroy or domesticate anything which is in it’s true character”. He believes we have left no room for new forms of life and hopes for a more co existential future.

Abishek(b.1984) graduated from National Institute of Fashion Technology(NIFT) in 2005 and works from Bangalore, India.
